Onions - Shallots

Onions - Shallots

about

Shallots have a mild delicate flavour. They are cultivated in the UK all the year round.

Traces of onions have been found in Bronze Age settlements, so we've been using them for millennia. During the Middle Ages, they were heavily used, even in peasant cooking, because of their strong flavour. Did you know the Ancient Egyptians used to worship onions - believing that the rings represented eternal life.

Shallots are often included whole in stews and casserole. Shallots can be used in recipes where just a small amount of onion is need or where only a subtle onion flavour is required.

nutritional info

Healthwise, they have long been heralded as useful in the fight against coughs and colds... “An onion a day keeps a cold away!” They contain anti-inflammatory, anti-cholesterol and even anti-cancer ingredients. Onions are also a good source of fibre.

storing Onions - Shallots

Keep shallots in a cool dark place, but not the fridge. They keep best if they have air circulating around them - hence the traditional method of hanging them in plaits to dry in barns - and can keep for months.
